We recently converted from a gas log to wood burning. Upon doing that, the hole to the ash pit was open and I was told it is best to cover that up. I put a large slab of slate on the floor of the fireplace to cover the hole, with the grate on top, but haven't put mortar in there as of yet.

Any thought on whether this is the best way to do it?
