Cracked 1979 vc defiant. How should i repair?

welcome. you could have someone drill it and weld it. it's just a hairline crack. or run it for this coming year and see if it gets worse. that might have taken years to do. but what ever you do keep a inch of ash on top of the bottom as a insulator. you might make it for a while without a fix. but never clean it out bare and run it with nothing on the bottom. if you don't have any ash available use sand.

if you start seeing sand or ash underneath the stove then it got bigger and you should stop using it til it's fixed.
 
If there wasn't a bed of sand or ash when this stove was run, that may be why it cracked. From the manual:
