Rounds do not dry fully. Split them in half, at least. Your new unit will benefit even more. It will require it.

Not going to argue that they won’t fully dry but the boiler he has now will gobble them up and not care. I routinely throw in 12”+ rounds and they burn just fine. I have a 7400MP which is the same stove as his but one size larger.

Look at this pile of mostly junk that’s going to get turned into hot water. Very little is split.

So is it a multi pass boiler or a true gasification boiler? It probably was stated somewhere back it the thread but I missed it. I thought it was a true gasification outdoor wood boiler with a secondary chamber and lots of refractory. If it is just a multi pass out door wood boiler I think he should see some wood savings, I don't know if it could really be 40%.

MP = multi pass boiler / water heater. Definitely not in gasification territory when it comes to efficiency but much better than a Hardy or a Hawken. From what I've heard, they are roughly 60 - 65% efficient using dry wood. I'd guess a Hardy is maybe 20 - 30% efficient so a 40% jump in efficiency is not that far of a stretch.

By design, if it's not burning off the gasses it is going to make creosote that will hinder heat exchange no matter how many times it turns back and forth. I wonder what the exhaust temperature is at the stack? I know with my old hawken you could light a piece of paper on fire at the top of the chimney. It didn't make much smoke at full tilt but it was pushing all the heat out and couldn't transfer it into the water with everything coated with creosote. I kept using it for a couple of years while I scronged the pieces to put my eko with 1000 gallons of storage together. I sold the hawken and never looked back

There are a few guys who monitor their exhaust temperatures on their G4000's in the FB group I'm apart of. They generally see 300 - 350F exhaust temps when the boiler / water heater is running. All I see coming out of the stack on my boiler / water heater is steam. You can smell smoke but you can't see it.

Been a while since I temped my stack but if memory serves correct it’s in that 500f area. Anything lower than that and it gets gummy in the multipass area and anything hotter than that and it’s just pumping heat outside.

A neighbors home built boiler will have a short flame coming out of its 4’ stack. He goes through about the same amount of wood as I do but only heats his house and garage for around 2,500sq/ft. I’m heating almost 10,000sq/ft with the house, garage, well house and farm shop.

@Terryl glad to hear you found the likely issue. Once you update the lines you’ll really like that stove.

Yes. Non pressurized built out of a chunk of heavy walled pipe with a larger chunk of heavy walled pipe outside it. The thing will outlast us both but absolutely eats wood. No baffles inside or anything fancy and the stack comes out the back and turns up to the sky.

Talk him into some mods?
I have plans to build a gasser. Been researching since I joined the Hearth. Just acquired my burn chamber recently. A 420lb/120gal LP tank. I'm also building it to last a lifetime. Water vessel will be stainless with heat transfer through exhaust tubes.

Can the OP please report wood usage back after you switch the new boiler over to demand. I would think that would be apples to apples comparison between the 2 boilers

I will let you know what happens when the on demand relay is installed. I shut it all down and went south for awhile. It has got colder in Ohio so I am glad I shut this wood hog down.
