I recently acquired an older Winter Warm Small insert stove. I replaced the glass and did some painting and welding to get it back in shape. When I put it into my firebox i noticed that I am nowhere near the flue. I've found Some offset boxes that go up to 8" inches but I need about 16" center to center to reach the liner. The firebox is only 24 inches high but very deep. I started building my own offset box that will fit my application but I am starting to question should I just ditch this stove and look for something rear vented instead of top vented? I mean I can build it but am I pushing my luck with this distance? Any advice would be appreciated.

How far in from the fireplace opening is the flue opening? Is that a masonry fireplace with a masonry flue? Any pics? At 24" height you will have problems finding a rear-vented stove that will fit.

Can you reach the liner by using a stainless 30 or 15 deg elbow and curving the liner to meet the elbow? Or use a combo of two elbows to create the offset?

Is that some kind of see-through fireplace? I am wondering how that ever worked even as a plain fireplace. Could you provide some pics?

I am not aware of any inserts that have a flue outlet that far back. As far as rear-vented "inserts" you could take a look at the Regency hearth-mount H2100. Maybe that fits in there and can be somehow connected to the flue. You could probably recess it further in and put a custom surround around it.

I have the insert in place right now so I can't get any pictures. I just bought the home, but judging by the soot up the wall i'm assuming not so well. It's just a very deep fireplace. If you were to set the fire directly under the flue you would have a very difficult time reaching in and adding wood to it. It seems the previous owner just set the fire up mid way. Heck you need to reach in with a poker just to open the damper. You can't even touch the handle without it.
