DEP gone array - wood stoves are bad !

The DEP is now looking at outside wood furnaces as a enviormenta hazzard. Even though the owners of these furnaces all have the proper permits.
Hunterdon county is a rural part of NJ. The nearest houses can be hundreds of feet away.
They are now looking (on public property) at the chimney of these to see if they put out too much smoke.
I guess burning oil is much better.

The paper stated they may be looking at home wood stove as excessive smoke pollution.

It's already happened here in Orange County....there have already been towns that have banned them due to "excessive smoke and emissions", including the town I live in. Happened a few months ago.

It's happened here in Massachusetts, too. Many towns have banned them altogether, including the one I live in.

personally , i think they shold have to meet EPA standards just like our stuff does, OWB's are enjoying a rapidly closing loophole. given time and proper regulation hey will either have to change their ways (as the real hearth industry has) or they will just go under.

i dont dislike the idea, i just think they need to be cleaned up

In this area, rural N/E Ohio, I would say 1 out of 25 homes has an outdoor wood boiler. I do not think the County Government will take on the fight since they have septic issues that are very unclear and taking up valuable time. I am sitting on the fence and just watching. There is big money in the units. I do know all the costs involved and have considered selling the units.

I'm seeing the issue come up here in the towns in my area.....but it mainly stems from WHAT the people are burning in their fireboxes that is annoying their neighbors. They aren't ment to act as an incinerater for your garbage.....or ment to burn pressure treated lumber and old cresote fence posts.

Hmmm... Does that mean that the clean burning version of the 28-3500 I have always wanted can't be far away? :cheese:

Here in VT, they have made new statewide regulations regarding emissions. Any new installs must meet the state's criteria and be on the approved list before it can be installed. The state's list pretty much follows the Fed listing. At least they are approaching it sensibly instead nof just banning all OWB. The new gassers like the CB are every bit as clean and efficient from what I have seen and I have read some of the others do very well also. Before the ax is dropped on OWB, people should drive around and look at what comes out of chimneys with wood stoves compared to some of the new OWB's that gassify!

got to agree with "warm in vt". My neighbor has a e-classic, it smokes minimally, and that's just on start up or restoking. Got another buddy that has a 6048, last years version, before compliance. He burns semi-seasoned wood, no garbage. Smokes alot(compared to the eclassic), big difference between the two. But both guys are on sizeable property. 6048 owner is sitting in 70 acres, neighbors 1/2 mile away, thru the woods. E-classic guy has neighbors within 7/800 ft, but located so the prevailing winds blow away from everyone, next neighbor down wind is miles away.
As far as banning woodstoves, that's a little much. Sounds like you got some public hacks with tooooo much time on their hands. Time for some staff reductions and serious budget cuts in local government.

last year Central Boiler spent 2.5 million of their own $$ to make a OWB that goes from light up to no smoke in 9 mins, exceeds any EPA standard at only 3 grams per hr +/- good units are out there
