Dolmar 5100s vs 510

I have read nothing but good things about the Dolmar 5100s so today I went to a local dealer to get a price on one. I told him I wanted to look at the 50cc Dolmar chainsaw and he took me to the 510. I then asked if he had any 5100s in stock I could look at and he said the 510 replaced it. I question him so he took out a 2008 catalog and said he thinks thy no-longer make the 5100s saw and the 510 replaced it.

So.. I have seen people here in the forums say they just purchased a new 5100s not too long ago, so do they still make them? I would really like to have the 14,500 PRM over the 13,500, also it has a little bit more power rating which I want due to I'm wanting to go with a 20" bar.

I can't find any on-line dealers to buy from so I'm stuck with this place. Should I go back and tell him he's full of it and I want a 5100s? our just get the 510?

He gave me a good price on the 510 (I think), $349 with a 20" bat & chain.

Your dealer has his head in the sand. The 5100s will be @ $75 more.

The 5100s is the pro version of the 510. It is faster, lighter and has more hp than the 510.

The dealer doesn't know his saws. I just bought a 5100s on Friday.

Find a new dealer.

Yep.. I agree. I have 2 other dealers with-in 25 miles. I'll call them tomorrow. I just thought it would be nice to deal with someone only 2 miles from my home.. Oh well.. Sometimes it's worth it to take a road trip.

You're lucky. I had to drive 1hr.+
I had my heart set on this saw though.

Hey dave, From everything I have read the dolmar 5100 is a great saw and the bigger 7900 may be even better in its class. Keep after it. I just wanted to let you know I got a 53cc saw several years ago the Husqvarna 353. Man, that is a great little saw. Probably not any better than the 5100 but I just wanted to recommend it as a second option. It has been so much better than the poulans with little vibration and no trouble starting. I got it at Hagan's saw shop near Owensboro. The husqvarnas at lowes, rural king etc I would not recommend. When you get the 5100 let me(us) know how you like it. By the way I paid around $375.00 for my husky. Tony

Just bought our 2nd 5100 a week or so before Christmas (for my boy). It was $399 + tax. At that price it is a very good deal. Dealer isn't up to speed apparently, or wants to get rid of stock. Either way I think I would be concerned. My dealer didn't have one either but supplier is very good. Dealer said he'd have it in 2 days--got it in one. Good luck!

OK.. So this morning I called a different dealer (PMMR in Owensboro) super nice guy on the phone and very knowledgeable about the Dolmar's. He said he just sold his last 20" bar for the 5100 but he will get one in about 2 or 3 days. I'm out of town anyway so it really don't matter.

Anyway I got one from him this morning, hopefully I'll be picking it up Friday or Saturday.

I was very please with this person. He was telling me all about the history of Dolmar and the 5100s saw. I think I made the right move, the other dealer didn't even know what the 5100 even was.

Congratulations dave, you will probably feel absolutely in heaven running that saw compared to the craftsman(poulan). After getting my husky (after using various poulans) having a chainbreak was one of the biggest improvements. I now feel a chainbreak is a must for safety on a saw. There is a possibilty at some point you may want to get a smaller bar for your new saw. I have a 20" and a 18" for my 353 and I like the 18" bar better except for actually cutting down trees. A 16 or 18 inch bar seems more manuverable for limbing and I use the 18 " bar to measure my splits to 18". The key to maximizing a smaller saw like a 50cc is to keep a sharp chain. I bought a husky chain sharpening guide and sharpen my chain with a file real often. After getting that saw sharpening guide I never take my chains to a saw shop. PMMR in Owensboro???? Can you order parts etc. from this shop. That is important. I have had to order a clutch spring and a muffler bolt and Hagan's either had it or could get it in a couple days. Anyway, enjoy your new saw along with your lopi insert. Tony

Come on Tony... I was hoping you'd say nothing but good things about PMMR. I don't know who thy are, I've never been there but the guy on the phone really seamed very informative about the Dolmar brand.

Anyway, I will probably get a 18" bar with it also at some point but i thought that right now a 16" & 20" are a good combination right now. 16" for small stuff, and the 20" for tree trunks.

I just can't wait to get home so I can PLAY.......

Hey dave, found PMMR in the phone book. Surprise They are only a couple blocks from where I work. I pass them every day. Never noticed a PMMR sign anywhere. They have only been there about a year since maybe last spring. Didn't know they sold chainsaws. Good luck with them. Doesn't mean they aren't good. Just new and only seemed to sell offbrand mowers. I may drop an old poulan weedeater off there and see if they can do anything with it. I have a new straight shaft echo and hate it. Can't get used to the straight shaft design. Tony

I have a 16 and a 20. I've used the 20 once.

That 16 screems and you can take down a 30" tree comfortably....

Hey congrats atvdave. I think you will be pleased. My boy was skeptical about the good things said about the saw 'till he ran mine. Fell in love with it and we got him one. His still isn't broken in yet but he already likes it a lot better than the Husky 50 he was used to running. We both have 20 in. bars with 3/8 low (not safety) profile chain. I haven't heard of too many set up like that, but it works. Maybe eventually we will try another set up, but my little Dolmar has the same type chain, so it makes it easy for sharpening on the machine and fewer files to keep around. Keep us up to date with your experience and good luck!
