Draft and Creosote issues

I've shut down the EKO 40 for the year and when I pulled off the front cover for the fan, this is what I found. I did have a smoke problem on windy days this year, but no more than normal. I've never had this problem before (this is the 5th year I've been using the boiler). Would this be solved by a whirlybird cap to stop downdrafts, or is there something more serious at work? Btw, how would I remove the fan to clean the creosote out of it?

Phew...messy! On my Model 25 there is a small flapper on the inside of the cover plate. I wonder if the one on your boiler got stuck open? To clean, you might try a little kerosene an steelwool or a scotchbrite pad. Good luck...let us know what you found to be the cause.

I found the flap to be stuck open. (thanks JT). I want to order a new fan while a I clean this one. Does anyone know where I can order parts for model 40? It looks like they have one at new horizon, but the fan is about $125, and I'm not even sure its the right one.

I wonder if a good coting of anti-sieze applied to the hinge area of the flapper would prevent it from sticking again? Good luck!
