ductless centreal air

Being as I heat mainly with a pellet stove in the winter and I have no duct work in my old house I was thinking of getting rid of my old window a/c units and getting a ductless central a/c put in ....... Are they any good and will it save $$ on hidro over my old window a/c units

Two years ago I had central air install for the second floor of my house. I have hydronic heat so no duct work to the second floor. The quotes for the ductless system were high and would have required piping on the outside walls due to the walls being masonry walls. I ended up with a air handler in the attic with flex ductwork to various rooms. This is a common practice in commercial buildings.
Cost was about 40% less.

The problem with that is I have a 2 story house so it would't help on main level . what is the average price of a mid size ductless with install ??

These ductless systems are not central systems. One of the cost benefits is the ability to condition the rooms you choose, not the entire area. Similar to a window unit.

Lots of info on these mini-split systems over in the green room. The multi-room setups don't have the efficiency numbers of the single room systems. They also don't work in low temps as well either. I would ask a moderator to move this over to the green room and you will probably get a lot more action. A description of your house (i.e. layout/floor plan, insulation, and windows) will get you more answers as well.

Really window units are unsightly, but if you're looking to cool a room on the second floor especially nothing cools as well.
I know plenty who complain how hot it is on their second floor with central. Even with 2 units. My house is very old with 2 ft stone walls
so central is not an option for me.

THese things have fabulous SEER ratings up in the high 20s lately. Also the newer models work down to ZERO degrees and lower. I see one or two of these in my future with the woodstove serving as supplement and backup.
