I have an old wooden dynamite box. Right now it has old antique hand tools and cans in it. I have been thinking about using it as a kindling box near the stove. Is there any risk here? I only know what I know about dynamite from old westerns and Charles Bronson. You know, wipe the old stick of abandoned dynamite with your finger, and you can flip your fingers real fast and make the crystals pop off in a small spark.

Seems like it could be a cool box to have some small 8” kindling staged in.

Oops. We can move this to the tools and equipment section.

If the box is empty to start with, no problem. There was a thread years back on various wood storage options. Dynamite boxes were among them. There is a nifty idea posted today in the Wood Shed forum.

I’m sure it had dynamite in it years ago. My wife’s Great Grandpa cleared his own fields. I’m betting that’s how the stumps got removed. He had a lot of these old boxes, but most were severely damaged.

Some of my old bee hive supers would be cool too if I inserted a bottom, but they are covered in propolis and wax.

I use an old copper, laundry boiler tub.

Dynamite is bad for your health, not a joke or from the explosions it gives off a gas.

Quick google search with no real footnotes seems like the dangerous stuff is pretty inert after short term exposure to the elements. 75 years as a parts bin in a barn and 10 years as a storage bin in my building should render it as safe as a dry wood box full of kindling next to a wood stove can be.

I’ll keep searching.

Yep. That old stove was a beast in this house. A few wider angle shots for context and you can see why I only ran a split or two at a time once I had coals in the other stove. It never had a chance to meet its potential.
The main room is about 12x16 but opens up to a hallway to the bath and bedrooms and dining room that’s fully open to the kitchen.
I think I’m gonna like it.
