Driving home from work yesterday I saw a few guys cutting splitting and stacking on the side of the road. that land is state land so I doubled back and asked them if they were clearing the woods and what they were going to do with the wood. They told me that it was a tree that was in danger of falling on to the road so they had to take it down and that they were going to cut it into rolls and just leave it on the side of the road. I asked them if i could have it and they said yes but they couldn't guarantee that it will be there when i came back since it was a busy road. I was driving my sedan. I went to the near by deli and bought them all sandwiches and and sodas and coffee. they thanked me and I went on. I went back this morning and the wood was cut, split and stacked on the side of the road with a sign that read, "Not Free, Please do not take, state property" at the bottom of the note there was a second note saying "thanks for the sandwiches, please dont hurt your back". That to me said, Not Free unless you are the guy who brought us sandwiches and please take care of your back as loading it into your truck. LOL. do you all conquer.
Now the important question, what wood is it.

Looks like some type of oak to me.. The subs were worth every penny to get the wood cut and split for free! Great idea and score ;)

yes, ray, I actually got 3 tuck loads from that place all cut and split. i was out there at 6am today. Those are good guys to know. I gave them my cell number in case they are in the area doing work again they can buzz me.

Great lil story!

Nice! I love the note! These are good guys to know and even better guys to buy lunch for. I bet you will hear from them again.

Kat, looks like white oak.

Those guys were great. I hope I hear from them again. Dennis. The only other thing I can say about the wood is that it smells like very old library books.

I don't think it's oak because I can't see any obvious rays, but I have no idea what it is.

Good karma all around.

Holy cow! I was expecting them to leave it for you but not split. Nice deal.

Same here. I never would have guessed that it would have been split. The OP made out like a bandit. I would easily buy lunch and coffee in return for 3 truckloads of cut and split oak.

Yeah, I am debating between red and white oak. The splits look way too clean to be white oak. White oak usually leaves a few strings when split. Red oak splits nice and smooth. Most of the white oak I have gotten in the past 6 months has a heartwood that is close to the sap wood in color.

The smell has me thrown off though. My red oak smells like a fine cheese. The white oak smells like old library books. Both great smells as far as I am concerned.

Most definately not oak. I woull say either sycamore or yellow poplar.

That fresh split would have an oak aroma especially red.
The bark is throwing me off my guess of possible hard maple.
Good looking scrounge!

+1 for the maple ...it is comparable to something I got next to my house. Would also add this guy has great karma! Helps everyone including myself!!

Great score whatever it is.
Has similarities to white oak. IMO
but pictures are hard to tell 100%
