Noticed electrical burning smell last week then stopped working. Thru breaker to insert. It is a 2008 Mt Vernon AE insert. Opened up and found ac output was melted at power supply. So hot it also melted part of ac input and wall control wires. Anyone know why this could happen? My dealer has not been of help. No other issues noted before. Control board and firepot were replaced in 2009. Don't want replace parts unless l know cause.

Surge protection on the insert? I know we get a fair bit of voltage variation on incoming electrical current to the house... neighbour monitors this due to $$ tied up in his computers for his business.

This is not a "short circuit"....Looks like a classic high-resistance connection. Either a bad solder joint, or loose connector-pin terminal causes a higher than normal interconnect resistance, which then gets hot from the current passing thru it. Clean it up, resolder the connections on the back of the PC board (or redo the crimped-on pin (or socket) terminals) and you should be good-to-go.

Do a continuity test on it. No sense getting one if the one you have is good. But it does pay to have a spare on hand, as they usually go at the most inopportune time. There is a new wire harness for the igniter that has two inline fuses in it I would suggest. Part # SRV7034-273. That is an old control board you have. kap
The wires from the igniter are white. Do I assume this is the 380watt version? Is the new wire harness with fuses compatible? Do you know if the power supply control assembly comes with AC input and output wires or do they need to be ordered separately? Thanks for all your help?
Yes, the white wires are the 380 watt. The new harness works for both igniters. The input and output wires need to be ordered separately Double check on your DC output wire harness also. Most parts are in your owners manual except for the wire harness power supply receptacle part # SRV7034-233. kap
