Hello all, I am installing an Drolet Escape 1800 free standing woodstove and the clay chimney liner is 6" x 9" in my 2 story chimney. Stove is on the first floor. I've contemplated getting a 6" liner, however, I'm wondering if anyone can weigh in on the efficiency if I connect right to the chimney without the liner? The clay liner is in excellent shape and already had on old Vermont Castings Defiant hooked into it in the past. Thank you in advance.
Pete.

I believe that may be a bit big. The stove will run ideally with an insulated 6” liner. With a 6”x9” clay flue you’d probably have to have your liner ovalized

First has the chimney and clay liner been inspected with a camera? The that’s the only way to tell if it’s in Good shape.

Second does the chimney have the required clearance to combustibles 1” for exterior and 2” if it’s interior. Many/most don’t. If it doesn’t then an insulated liner is required by code.

If an insulated liner is required you will need to break out the clay liner or use an oval liner.

I have an 1800 insert on 23’ of insulated liner and it needs a damper. And this year I am going to cover the holes in the damper to add further restriction.
