exterior cleaning a wood stove?

can someone tell me what i can use to clean the exterior of a wood stove. we b ought a used one and it seems quite a bit dirty on the outside. should i just use plain water or is there anything else i should use?

Often the best thing to clean up an old stove is a good wire brushing and fresh coat of paint. Plain water may exacerbate rusting, so be prepared to dry quickly.
