Simple question, is regular pink Owens Corning fiberglass insulation non combustible? I am installing a liner in my fireplace for a hearth stove and doing the work myself, I have a sort of friend, more like a guy I know, who is a local certified sweep who told me to just use pink fiberglass insulation on top of my block off plate. As aside note, I did check Owens corning's website and they classify it as non-combustible, just want to see what everyone else says.

I have used the pink Owens Corning fibreglass as a flue liner. Also. packed the smoke shelf and the top of my blockoff plate with the stuff. That has been over four years ago and have had absolutely no problems. The flue really draws well and doesn't build creosote even though it is only fourteen feet to the cap. Be sure to pull the tar paper backing off. David

It is not approved for this application. I have seen more than enough melted fiberglass above and behind inserts to tell you it is a bad idea just go get some roxul

Thanks guys, will use roxul

I tested some pink Owens Corning fiberglass once with a blow torch, a propane torch, hit it for about 3 minutes and it didn't catch fire and didn't melt.
So, bholler I am surprised that you have seen it melt.

I used the pink stuff to seal around my old slammer insert surround and the stuff melted every year on the edges inside the fireplace.

Roxul brand name is not necessary but you want mineral wool, not fiberglass.
