I'm in the processing of repairing our fieldstone fireplace. It has some bricks that need repointing. I plan on using "Flue Goo" refractory recement.
I had the chimney and firebox inspected. They said it was good to burn, just to repair the bricks with refractory cement. The chimney is a one-piece poured liner that is still in good shape. That was done around 2000 by the previous owner.
There are some areas where the fieldstone and firebox meet that also need to be repaired. I'm not sure the best way to approach this. Could/should I chisel out the cracked/failing cement joining the fieldstone and firebox and then use Flue Goo in this area too? It seems like there might be some larger gaps to deal with. What's a good fix in this situation?
