Next to a lake in NH
With us getting a new bigger stove next fall, I would like to fire proof the walls around the stove.
We would love suggestions on how to make them nice and really nice hearth area!

You may want to check with your town's building inspector to see what your legal options are. We have a rear heat shield on a Jotul Castine that takes the rear clearance down to about eight inches or so.
 
It doesn't appear you can get these anymore, but we put up fireproof wall and covered with z-brick. Looks good. You can always put up some type of slate that comes in various designs.
