This is my new place I'm renting. Thought you might enjoy the pic and as an added bonus to me, thought you might be able to tell me what kind of... well I don't even know if it's technically a fireplace. Someone said it might be a coal burner, the house is pretty old and I know it did use to have a coal chute. It has some sort of key I haven't played with yet. I don't officially get the house until the 28th and this is a pic that someone else took. I can get a better pic with time.

Sorry I can't help ya, but it looks like a pretty cool room. I'd be interested to hear how that thing heats.
 
Looks like one of those old coal basket fireplaces.
 
They key may just be to turn the damper open/closed.
