Question:

I am writing with a question concerning the dimensions of a fireplace that I am building. My question is how big should the fire box be if the opening is 40" and the damper is 48"?

Answer:

There are many factors which dictate the correct size of a fireplace opening including:

1. Chimney flue size
2. Chimney Height
3. Chimney construction (inside or outside)
4. Smoke chamber construction (area above the damper)
5. Depth, height and width of the opening

Based on these variables, it would be impossible for me to give you a "rule of thumb" on your project. Check the masonry links at https://www.hearth.com/what/links.html - you might be able to gleam more info.
