Hello, we've just bought our first wood pellet insert, a Whitfield. We are replacing our gas fireplace with the pellet stove. We already have a gas vent. What kind of conversion is needed to accommodate the wood pellet insert? I don't understand why we are getting estimates of $400 - $500 to install the stove.

most gas vents cannot handle the exhaust from a pellet stove; that and the end caps and connectors are entirely different.. new pipes are probably required, which is why you are getting these bigger #s. if the gas vent is a direct temp, by selkirk, it can be converted to pellet exhaust with some modifications, but the kits to do so will run @ 400 dollars.
