Can you access the vertical portion of the flue liner through the exhaust tube or do you have to pull the entire stove out of the fireplace and disconnect the liner somehow? I watched Harman's video and they say both, at one point you have to pull the stove and then later they say you can access the flue through the tube.

To properly clean your flue you definitely need to remove the stove. A lot of the build my build up in my flue is just at the base of the actual flue itself that connects to the liner. No you don’t have to disconnect the liner. Before I had the stove I had trouble wrapping my head around it until I installed the entire stove, flue, and outside air kit myself. The liner stays in place permanently and the exterior exhaust flue connects to the back/top of it. There is a thick foam like gasket on it and the same type on the back type of the stove. When you slide the stove back into place and use the locking clamp on each side they compress together and that’s that your all set. If you tried going the stove exhaust into the flue exhaust I’m pretty sure that you would damage the ESP which is in the back of the stove exhaust.
I didn’t spend $500 on there thing that you roll the stove out on. I built a strong secure platform that I roll it out on to. It works great but the stove is really heavy. A good tip is to make sure your running low on pellets in the hopper is a great time to slide it out. Good Luck I hope this answered your question

Thanks so much for the reply! I thought I asked a bad question or something, 50 something views and no reply....I knew someone out there had to have experience with these.
A couple follow-ups if I dare-
1. Can you slide the stove out without taking the surround off? The instructions indicate it went on before it was installed but the pictures show it pulled out with the surround still in place.
2. Did you install a fresh air return? Again, the instructions say it will draw air from the room without one but also says about installing a fresh air return onto the stove.

I have a rail kit, but if you search the forums, there are some creative alternatives out there. For weight reasons, it is best to unclamp the stove from the surrounding frame. I personally have no OAK, but I'm sure between the brick chimney, and I always crack a small bay window open, everything seems to run just fine. Your setup may vary. I used to do HVAC work years ago, and every install is unique. If you don't feel comfortable pulling out the insert, you might want to have a service done for you. It's a great way to watch and learn.

Yes the surround stays in place. The stove slides out of the surround then it just slides right back in.All you have to do is open the two side doors undo the latch on each side.
I do have an OAK and I would definitely recommend one. I did a ton of research on this particular topic (OAK) and it was an easy decision. There are really no negatives only positives to putting one in. Plain and simple the stove needs air and will pull it from wherever it can in your house. The previous post was correct that each situation is different.
Some of the stories I’ve read about other people’s set ups without OAKS having cool drafts being pulled across the room to the stove from,doors, windows, outlets ect...
was enough to convince me to put one in.
My GUESS is that the stove might possibly be a little more efficient with an OAK, but that’s just a guess. Feel free to ask as many questions as you want there are no dumb questions. We’ve all been in your spot at once and this is what this forum is for
