Nford, took this close up of what I believe to be the bark of an aged red elm. However, it does not look like the bark of the 12 inch round ones that I have taken. This tree is about 32 " and the bark looks like the scales of an old armadillo.

Doesn't look like anything I have seen. My two guesses would be...... Walnut?? or Coffee tree?? Sorry not much help.
 
It's neither. I know it doesn't look like red elm but the leaves are on and they sure do. I'll try and do some more homework.
 
Thanks, Tim. Not at all familiar with Black Gum. Too far north to see it here.
