Free wood score...

Got a call from a friend I work with who operates a lawn care business on the side, He knows that I heat with wood in the winter... He said, would you be interested in the trunk of a big water oak??? I said absolutely He had already cleared the majority of the limbs an hauled them off cause the were rotten completely trough... So I took half day off work, and me and the little 029 Pro had a good ole time.... When I arrived, there was about 12' of a massive old oak laying on the ground, was able to visibly count 49 rings... Good start on the 2012-2013 pile....

I had to rip em down with the chainsaw to be able to pick them up!

All loaded up and headed home

Looks like a nice score, but how do the economics work out for free wood if you have to take time off work to go get it? Just wondering...

bert, good question... But I am a programmer and work a very flexible schedule... So I just finished what I was working on yesterday this morning, no economic repercussions... ;-)

Very nice find. Also good for the body as programming is not too strenuous work so the exercise does you well. Much better than going to the gym.

I wonder how much weight is on that trailer but am betting it is pretty heavy. Made you sweat a bit?

Backwoods, yeah not to strenuous sitting at a desk staring at a computer screen all day, thats why I hand split all my wood... As far as the trailer, yes it was real heavy, its a 5x12 homemade and as you can see it was stuffed... My F150 had no issues pulling it, but I was paying attention on the way home for sure...

JHall, I was hoping I didn't come across wrongly. Besides, computer programming can be fun! Well, it was a few years ago but now I've forgotten more than I had learned.

That is still a nice looking trailer. I was wondering if you redid it if you would put the wheels just a little bit further forward. It looks pretty heavy on the tongue but I bet it backs up really nice.

Backwoods, I actually did redo the trailer a couple years ago, my step moms nephew made it as a project when he was in welding school about 20yrs ago... The floor of the bed was steel mezzanine grate, the tongue was only about a foot long and the axle was welded directly to the frame... I re-built and lengthened the tongue out to 40", removed the steel mezzanine grate floor and replaced it with a wood floor, added more stakes and cut the axle loose from the frame and added springs... While the axle was loose, me and a buddy spent quite a bit of time on axle placement to get a good 70-75lb tongue weight, and thats where the axle ended up... And yes, it backs, tows and tracks wonderfully... And no, you didn't come across wrong... It's all good...

And based on the old looking pictures it looks like the wood is already well seasoned.
