Gas fireplace help please!!!!

I recently built a house and the house has a heat pump central heat and I also have a pellet stove for the times that the temps really drop.

The master bedroom is larger than normal and me and the wife wanted a gas fireplace in the bedroom. I bought a wood mantle kit and then got a 26 inch ventfree propane fireplace to put in it. Well we hate it because it produces an odor. Kind of a metallic odor...if that makes sense.

I want to replace it with a vented fireplace. I would love to get a 26 inch vented fireplace but the smallest vented fireplace that I can find is a 32 inch unit. I believe that I could convert the mantle to fit the 32 inch one but would rather have the smaller size. I think that I could fit as large as a 28 inch wide fireplace before having to do major mods to the mantle.

So, does anyone make a 26-28 inch wide vented fireplace?

Also FYI vent-free appliances are usually not allowed in sleeping areas unless they satisfy minimum air volume requirements. I hope you have some good CO detectors.

Thanks for the help. My bedroom is quite a bit larger than most bedrooms. It also has 11 ft ceilings. We also have a CO detector close to the unit. Due to the smell, we aren't using the fireplace at all. I like the looks of the fireplace but hate the odor. I think a lot of the odor comes from new carpet and other new stuff in the bedroom off gassing various chemicals and the chemicals getting burned in the fireplace but I still don't like it.

Any idea of a retail price and where is a good place to buy it? The web site puts kind of a broad price range on that fireplace.

Has the unit burned in yet? What that means is that they will give off smells until the paint and all the chemicals on the metal are burned off. On a warm day when you can be out of the bedroom, open some windows and let it burn for several hours, while the windows are open. After that, the smell may be gone.

I don't really like vent-free fireplaces or heaters, but I've used one for over 10 years in my living room. You're probably right in that it's burning the fumes from off-gassing. What I've found is that if I use any sort of chemical that produces fumes in the house the fireplace puts off a very odd odor. I've noticed it especially with things that are petroleum based, like floor wax.

I won't recommend that you keep it because, honestly, I don't think the vent free ones are healthy (I'd like to replace mine), but the fumes will probably dissipate if you choose to keep it.

Any idea of a retail price and where is a good place to buy it? The web site puts kind of a broad price range on that fireplace.

There is a dealer locator on the web-page.
Usually our list prices are on the low side of that price range on the web pages but it can vary from dealer to dealer so you would have to call one to find out. The price is for the UNIT only as well, you still need a front, venting, and finish materials.
