Question:

Craig: Great site-feel as if I just took a course in the subject! I am searching for the best direct vent, 60-70% efficient fireplace insert I can find. Can you suggest brands which fit this description that are safe, reliable, good looking and which can be converted from propane to furnace use of gas if I get a gas furnace in the future? (You said there were some that could not be converted.) Thanks in advance...!

Answer:

Most direct vents can be converted...it's vent frees that have the biggest problems.

Look at gas inserts by Travis Industries (http://www.travisproducts.com/) and also Mendota (http://www.mendotahearth.com)...these are very decent models. There are lots of others that are good, and part of the proper decision is finding a dealer that you feel comfortable with.
