Pellet County N.H.
Picked up 6 bags of Maine woods pellets "premium" pellets as I had happily burned them in prior years.
They burn hot but have more ash than I like.
But the big let down was the amount of sawdust and fines per bag,
Absolutely unacceptable at just shy of three 16 oz glasses.
Buyer beware and sift sift sift these pellets.....

QC was doing their job nicely.

I am not real critical of premium pellets but always sift and after the 1st bag I decided to see really how much dust and fines were there.
Odd as the pellets in the bag are not beat up into small pcs and there are normal size pellets throughout the bag.
Has anyone else seen this in these pellets?
Sorry MWP I have had prior good luck with your pellets.

That sure is a lot of fines. ....I am not sure how necessary it is to sift them though.....I haven't experienced any ill effects from having fines.

it's possible those bags could have had a rough time of it since they left the plant.

As I said and again as I said, read the threads hermithoss and apologized about the basement camera date so no big deal on that.

I don't burn designer pellets and this is just out of the ordinary and as said I happily burned them in prior years.
never had that much fines in a bag of pellets.

Or got wet and deteriorated in the bag.

That just isn't normal!

Hi JoeS,
I thought that as well and have seen wet pellets in bags with saw dust.
The pellets look fine just appears to be like the separator or what ever may have gone down for a while on the line etc.
It will not stop me from trying them again in a while as I am sure all pellets have some issues per batch etc.
And again sorry about the date to everyone.

Just do a quick sift to keep the dust out of the house when filling the hopper as a few here have Asthma and the dust irritates them.

I actually did an experimental fines run in the stove a couple years ago.
Collected a half bucket of fines and dumped it in and fired er up and the stove ate em up fine.

I just have not seen this much from one bag not being water damaged before.

That's crazy! I know MWP are dusty, but that's really out there. I mean, ½ of one of those cups is a lot in my book.

I made a hopper to pour the bags into first to seperate the dust and fines from the pellets. We don't pour the bags directly into the stove's hopper because of the plume of dust that follows. I got it now so no fines or dust go into the stove. Happy wife is a happy life!

Are you going to burn these since your experiment turned out alright? I won't get that many fines from a ton of pellets. Makes me wonder what part of the manufacturing process broke down.

As I said, I've been burning the MWP for a few years, and it's been at least 2 years since I saw that design on the bag. Are these old ones that were stored in the back corner of the local general store, maybe, tucked away in somebody's barn ...............????? BUT, my point is, I can put anything I want in front of a bag of pellets and take a picture ....................

And you could also pretend you have a pellet stove, and a house to use it in.....if that's what you are in to......seems a bit ridiculous to throw the idea that this is staged without any proof whatsoever.

I concur. Well stated.

This came out of a bag a "premium pellets", and when I contacted the pellet company the production manager knew exactly what it was and where it came from. But I suppose hermit hoss would think that had been staged as well.

Yup I will burn em as I liked them in the past and I sift as a few here have Asthma and the dust from dumping direct into hopper bothers them. they put out good heat.

Hi Hermit hoss dude,

No these were purchased new on Saturday at a store and I checked the MWP web page and they still make this blend and its a I believe a 65% hardwood 35% softwood blend and rates pretty good.
They do put out good heat and I would not make it up putting the 3 glasses there as I would rather fill them with beer.
I would not hesitate to purchase MWP again as I have seen plenty of other brands have off bags and actually an off ton or two and went back to them after they resolved the problem.
Take care Hermit man.

Those Premium Wood Pellet bags are at Home Depot in Biddeford and the Shaws in Sanford. Walmart also has that label, but they are all sold out.

Looks like clumping cat litter LOL....

I usually do the quick sift in the basement but the first bag puffed so much dust it got in my eyes and 10 minutes later was sneezing big time that the 2nd bag I did outside upwind, LOL as I will with the remaining 4 bags.
Empty inside bags had large amounts of dust stuck to them as well and if collected would have topped off cup #3 LOL.
