Great find on CL! My first catalytic stove.

So I don't exactly know why but I get great enjoyment out of searching CL for great deals on wood stoves. I will sometimes search multiple times a day. I never buy the stoves I find but I just enjoy seeing what's out there. I was searching late last week and happened upon what looked to be a Woodstock Stove Fireview. I did some research on the stove and saw that a lot of people on here absolutely love the stove. So I jumped on it. I bought it for 275$ sight unseen. Luckily when I got there the stove was in great condition. No cracks, no warping, just needed a good cleaning and the cat replaced. I can't find any identification plate or anything on the stove though. So I'm not sure what model of stove it is. I have emailed Woodstock Stoves some pictures in hopes that some can ID the model of the stove. This is my first catalytic stove and I am super excited to burn with it this year. The last couple of years we have been burning in an old Nashua wood stove. It definitely kept us warm but it needed tending to about every 4-5 hours and just devoured wood. I'm guessing there will be a heck of a learning curve in using the stove but I look forward to it. If any of you can help me ID what model this is I would greatly appreciate it!

Maybe a Fireview 201? If you sent the shots to Woodstock they will know. Is there a UL tag may be on the stove back underneath the heatshield?

There is nothing underneath the heat shield. I removed the shield just to check. I was thinking it's a 201 also but I looked at other 201's and there are slight differences in mine. On their website when I look at the 201 exploded view it shows a rectangular cat. The one in mine is circular like what came in the classic.

I'm not sure. I have checked the entire stove over and couldn't find anything. I just sent an email to Woodstock tonight so hopefully I will hear something in the next few days. I love the stove though. The only thing I didn't think about was how to remove the glass? I planned on dismantling the stove and replacing all of the gaskets but it seems to be in really great shape so I might not mess with it. So I'm guessing the only way to clean the glass is by reaching through the loading door?

Before dismantling the stove go on you tube and look up Woodstock, there's a few videos showing how they put there stoves together, that can really help you understand how it was built.

I was shocked when i seen it. My first thought was it probably needs rebuilt. Luckily it seems to be in really good shape. Yesterday I emailed Woodstock pictures and explained to them that it has no ID plate or UL markings or anything. Still waiting to hear back. I hope to hear from them soon.

That stove looks very similar to my Woodstock Classic, except the Classic of course doesn't have the glass in the front, just solid soap stone. The upper chamber with the cat looks the same. Mine is a great stove, but I can tell you that you aren't going to get longer burn times than the 4-5 hours you mention with your current stove. On my Classic the firebox just isn't that big and I probably reload every two to three hours when I want to keep the heat flowing. In my case the Classic is downstairs and I heat the upper level of the house with my Jotul F 600 and only burn the Classic when I'm downstairs watching a football game in my man cave or when it drops below 20F and I need some extra heat to keep things warm. Nonetheless, I think you will enjoy the stove. Good luck.

That's a Fireview stove from the 80's with what we called a "belly baffle". This style Fireview preceded the Fireview 201, and was made for a short period of time. The internal belly baffle can be upgraded to the 201 style baffle kit if the current baffle is in any way damaged.

The listing label for this stove and the 201 would have been attached to the bottom heat shield and seen below the loading door of the stove. I don't see the bottom heat shield in the images above, so it was likely separated from the stove at some point in time.

The bottom heat shield can be purchased and it is a required shield (the hearth clearances are determined with the shield installed). I believe the hearth clearances are the same as the 201 Fireview which is 16" on the door side and behind the stove, and 8" on the non-door side and in front of the stove. We'll see if we can find an old manual for the belly baffle stove stashed away to confirm this.

When this stove was tested in the 80's an R Value would not have been specified. Instead, a minimum hearth construction was given. The hearth construction requirement would be 3/4" plywood or subfloor, minimum of 1/2" thick cement board, and a minimum of 1/4" thick tile. If the finish material (tile/brick/stone) was left un-grouted, a 24 gauge layer of sheet steel would need to used between the plywood and cement board.

Yes, the specified hearth construction was with the bottom heat shield installed on the stove (it was part of the BOM). There are certain installations in which the bottom heat shield would not be required. One is a cement floor (basement/slab), and in certain fireplace installations (only with our pre-approval). With that said, we err on the safe side, if a customer is unsure of the construction of the hearth, it is prudent to use the bottom shield.

Way to go Lorin- obviously you guys understand the prudence to monitor Hearth.com. I wished more of the MFRs would (I think a lot do, but do it on the down low...). Anyway, keep making those beauties you do.
