I get the Harbor Freight e-mail flyer, and in my latest one they had a mention of a 30ton splitter w/ Robin engine for 1299 - I was curious as I'd heard rumors that HF was replacing that model with one that has a different Chinese brand engine (an unknown quality copy of the Robin engine)

When I clicked on the link, I found that the splitter being advertised was the Horizontal only model w/ log lift, 4 way wedge, etc.. Think HF version of the Timberwolf style.... Normally HF has been selling that model for $1599, which wasn't a bad price for that style machine, it is now on sale for $1299 - this is the same that I paid for my recently acquired H/V 30 ton....

I'm not upset as I prefer an H/V style unit, which I will probably almost never use horizontally in any case, but for anyone looking for a Horizontal only, this looks like one heck of a good deal.

(My guess is they may be trying to clear those units out so they can replace them with a different engine version, like they did with the H/V model.)

NOTE - Sale flyer says it expires on Nov. 5th, 2008....

Lets talk about that.

What splitters are made in the USA? I've been looking at manuel hydraulic splitters form westcoastminisplitters.com because they ARE made here, in Colorado. But who else makes their machines domestically anymore?

And the engines that power them? I've read on here that everyone love's their Honda or Robin/Subaru engine, but god forbid you tell them to trade their Ford, Dodge or Chevy for a Toyota or Nissan!

In the lower price ranges Speeco and American are USA made. Now that said I don't know if the B&S;engines are American made. Also I read on the Arboristsite.com that the new Huskee aka Speeco splitters donot have prince pumps on them but some maybe foreign brand. If you truly what a low cost splitter built in the USA build your own. My 22ton Huskee (speeco) from TSC has the "made in USA" stickers on it for what it is worth. Speeco I believe are built in golden ,CO

I believe that Super Splits are made in Mass. And the knock off Wood Wolf is made 2 towns over in Barnstead NH (broken link removed) The neighbor kid has one. Its pretty cool, fast cycle, but I havent seen it in gnarly maple yet, just beech and ash.
Granted they are powered by Honda but heck the motors might be made in the US also.
And isn't Timber Wolf made in the US?
I know my splitter motor is made in the US. Good old International Harvester.

I just bought the 22ton from TCS and I'm pretty (99.9% sure) sure it's a speeco. I was going to mention the "assembled in USA" sticker, but on a re-read, I saw that you did that already.

So you have personal experience with this splitter then or are you just xenophobic?

I've been thrilled with my 27 ton HF splitter for the last 5 years.

I've heard of snail mail but would expect e-mail to take less than 6 months to arrive!

I have had no trouble with my HF 22 ton. The key components, pump and engine are the best in the business.

Brave and Iron & Oak are made in the US although the Brave does use some foreign components.
