Harman P43 Door Gasket Replacement

I am including a picture of the way the factory did the rope. They use a sleeve to bind the ends. It leaks from day 1. I tried a quick fix using RTV to build that area up. It was better but not perfect. I got through the year and this year as part of my pellet stove work I added the new rope. I bought the gasket and cement from Amazon, but when I tool the original gasket off I found out they used black RTV, so I used RTV too. Thanks to begreen who gave me some instructions in another post. My "Big" idea was to use RTV to bind the ends and seal them together. The cutting was done with a snap off exacto with a new blade. I used a heat gun on low to cure the RTV so I could do it all in an hour or so. So far after a few firesit's perfect.In fact I have had to clean my glass a few times as now I can see the old dirt.
I believe the old gasket was not airtight as my flame seems better. The one "hard" part is to get a feeling for laying the rope. You want it not stretched, not compressed, but just right. The more you bunch it up the bigger the diameter and density. The brand of rope you buy will make difference too as they all have different densities. I used 3/8 standard rope. I show the spring loaded pins on the door hinge.
I installed the door after to compress it and seat it. It was a little too hard to close but not bad for my first time. Then I opened the door and let it sit till the fire that night. Since it was a little hard to close I know knew I had too much compression but it's good. I can close the door and latch it with no problem.

Honestly every time I've replaced a door seal (firebox or ashpan), it has been tough to close. They compress with use and in a short amount of time, you don't even notice it. I start to get antsy when the door is too easy to close.

I don't bind or seal the ends together, just lay one frayed end on top of, against, or beside (in the case of the ashpan door) the other. Probably either way (bound or unbound) is just as good as the other as long as the result is the same in the end.

OK good to know. That was the first time I ever changed one. There was a video online I watched

and he ended it frayed but said sometimes he uses his RTV.
Yes, I noted on my ash door they overlap the gasket rope by and inch or so. Nice design for down there, but I guess
not a good design for a door.
