Ok I have a Jotul firelight 600 12 I would like to build a cheap hearth what I want to do is lay durarock on my floor, put fire brick on top of that, then my stove on brick and need to be close as I can get to wall. The wall is knotty pine, I do not want to tear it out right now because I am not sure if stove will stay in this spot. I may move it next summer so for the wall I was going to fir out 1 inch from wood wall and put durarock from floor to ceiling. That should give me my 1 inch air space and if stove stays there for good then I can do it right. Time is not on my side and also heat shield is not a option right now. I also need to put stove pipe thru roof and it needs to be right as in if I plan on my stove being in this spot for good. I plan on single wall black stove pipe so how close can I be to my durarock wall? I think I read 6 inch again if my stove stays in this spot. All I want to do is build the hearth for floor and wall next summer so it is important that hole in roof is made if the stove will be there for good. thanks for all help

Is this the modern Jotul F600CB or the older catalytic F12? You were looking at getting a Jotul 12 cat stove if memory serves me right. Is this what you bought? Assuming that, a simple hearth will work fine for the F12. You can just tile the Durock backerboard or put on a half-brick veneer. For the wall protection you could use any non-combustible material including putting up a 4' x 8' sheetmetal shield on spacers. Just be sure it is open above the hearth by at least an inch and open at the top by an inch to allow good ventilation behind the shield.
