We have a raised hearth.is it ok to put the hearth pad on top of the carpet and butt the hearth pad up to the hearth???we have a f400 on the hearth and need to use a hearth extension.
If it's an NPFA hearthpad, it's ok, but it should be captive so that a gap can not form between the pad and the hearth. You want a continuous ember barrier in front of the stove.

What's under that carpet? Hardwood you might want to refinish someday? or a more modern industrial-grade plywood subfloor that nobody cares about? If it's the latter, i'd say just plunk the extension pad down onto the carpet, butt it up to the face of the raised hearth, and pop a couple screws down in the corners of the pad w/ finish washers to hold it in place.

Well that's a little more complicated, but maybe not terribly so. You planning on building out the hearth more permanently when you tear up the carpet? If so, then the oak right in front of the existing hearth might be considered expendable? You could still screw down into it. Otherwise, maybe try some small metal brackets (tiny Stanley L-brackets, like 1/2" or so) and then thru-bolt those about 1/2" away from the rear edge of your pad, bend them back a bit, and sink some long screws thru the brackets and pad edge, right down against the face of the hearth? Not sure exactly how your hearth face terminates w/ the carpet, if there's trim there, etc...
