Hey! Long time reader first time poster.

I inherited an SBI XVR-II when I bought my house. It throws good heat but at the end of the burn cycle is often fills with coals. My other stove doesn't seem to to do this. I push the SBI a lot harder so I'm wondering if it is because I'm pushing the stove too hard or is this a known problem with this type or era of stove.

Thanks for any feedback! Thanks!

It depends on the air setting and the wood species. Some coal more than others. I put a couple of skinny splits (2" diameter) on top and open up the air more to keep making heat while burning them down.

I have tried this. I'm burning mixed hardwood, Maple and Oak primarily. I burn the same mix in my timberwolf insert without the same issues. I often burn with the primary half open to avoid coaling but it doesn't work great and reduces the efficiency and increases flue temps.
