help! 500 degrees and counting...

I reloaded my stove with 5 Envi 8 blocks and topped it off with cord wood. within 5 mins I shut it down all the way and it was about 400. It continues to rise. Up to 500 now, mainly secondaries. not sure what to do to ensure it doesn't go past 600. It's like the wind is coming dOwn the pipe feeding it. But it is mainly secondaries. Now what?

If we are talking stove top, 600 is OK just cut the air. Once you get past the outgassing stage it will settle down. Even 700 or more is fine just scary the first time it happens.

If you really feel it's out of control (glowing parts) open the door wide and the cool room air will cool it. What kind of stove?

Hearthstone Shelburne. Manual says it should not exceed 600.

5 Envi blocks is a lot at one time, don't do that. The temp will continue to rise. If the stove top temps are at or below 700F stay calm and ride it out. Next time try just 2-3 Envi blocks instead.

I believe it's a hearthstone shelburne.

These stoves normally cruise pretty low, but you're fine for now. If it pushes 700 I'd consider swinging the door open as mentioned above, just commit to it if you have to do it. Flood it w cold air, don't just crack it and feed the flames.

But I wouldn't worry too much, however I am not all that familiar with the envi blocks or how they burn.

The Shelburne manual also says burn firewood only. Here are the Envi block instructions:

INSTRUCTIONS / WARNINGS FOR USAGE OF ENVI & ENVI-8 BLOCKS
1. Use inside only properly maintained and ventilated wood burning stoves, fireplaces, and furnaces.

2. We recommend you consult the manufacturer of your wood burning appliance on use of this product.

3. To Start - establish a bed of coals using kindling or a fire starter product before adding 1 or 2 blocks.

4. Add additional blocks as appropriate for the size of your wood burning appliance.

5. Maintain the desired temperature and burn time by controlling air flow and spacing between blocks.

6. Burn responsibly - Avoid overheating by controlling air and not over filling your fire box.

7. Do not stack Envi Blocks too close to glass doors/windows of stoves, fireplaces.

8. Store in Dry Place

Glowing metal is a problem. I wouldn't want to overfire my stove but one mild overfire is not going to kill it. If you are worried turn off the lights and look for the glow esp around the flue collar area as that's most likely going to be a hot spot. Otherwise as BG said ride it out. It's a little unnerving but usually OK.

The Shelburne is a good stove. I think the 600F recommendation is because of the soapstone blocks in it. But as long as the stove is properly installed it should be ok if the temps get a bit higher. Try to remain calm and keep us posted on what is happening and how the stove temps are doing.

I've got a larger Hearthstone and it does get scary when it is throwing so much heat out. As posted, the stove will handle this better than you will. If it gets too hot, open the door fully. The fire will go wild but the temps will actually go down. It sounds counter intuitive but more air flow means less temps.

My stove is cruising at 600 right now.I wouldn't worry about it. I was the same way when I got the stove. Pack it up and let it burn. 5 envi blocks is pushing it. I go with 3 for overnight burns.

It's also the way you pack them in there. If you allow for air gaps, it'll run away pretty quickly. Packed together tightly, it remains more controlled.

20 inches here on li, dont seem as bad as 2 years ago though. Ive had my shelburne up to 600, put out some crazy heat up there. Most time it stays 350-450 for a while. Never used those blocks before, but id guess it leveled out.

Mine cruises between 600-700 and maybe a tad over. If your manual says 600 I'm sure your good to 800.

Good for you hanging in there and good job learning to run your stove. Sounds like its got a good home. Now that you got that under your belt all in all sounds like a good burn.

Still snowing hard here in Suffolk, can't tell what the total is. Supposed to 20" so far.

I suppose we could have told you to plug up the air intakes. On my old hearthstone there was a single 3" snout for all combustion air and blocking that would have snuffed the stove immediately. Do you know where your intake is?

I was prepared to do that if things got bad. Looked up the Shelburne and found the OAK connection is in the rear center I think.
