Gas fireplace is in knee wall of family room over garage not alot of space to work.
Knee wall is fully insulated and sheetrocked. Gas fire place inserted into wall and vented
directly out roof. Crawl space behind wall and fire place is extremly cold should I be insulating around stove?

Build a stick frame, sheetrocked box around it floor to roof rafters/trusses & insulate the walls.
You sheetrock the underside of the roof framing & maintain whatever clearances
are specified in your manual.
It'll make for a warmer install.
An uninsulated fireplace will form cold drafts in the room just by the
nature of air convection...
