A friend of mine is having trouble with a Huntsman Model 241, the smoke is backing up and he needs a way to clean the inside which is believed to be clogged. The pipes have all been swept but there was no good way to access the top side of the stove where the smoke jogs back and forth before leaving the stove itself. Does anyone have any prior experience or possible idea's to clean this out. The home was recently purchased and this is his first use, no prior information on the condition of the stove or if ever maintained.

This is the design of the stove and the area in question.

It looks like one could make a U shaped tool out of flat stock to scrape that area. I would tape some hose onto the end of a shop vac to try and suck out the baffle top. Also, have him also check to see if there is a cap on the chimney with a screen. If there is take it off and clean it.

If he needs it, the manual for the stove is here:

Note that the issue may not be with the stove at all. He could be dealing with backflow from the chimney or negative pressure due to the stove location. This is not uncommon with basement stove installations. As a new homeowner he should have the entire flue system cleaned and inspected by a certified chimney sweep before trying to burn. There may be defects that could make burning unsafe.
