help with my stove

Hey everyone. I'm new to the site and I recently(1week) bought a Tasman 40i pellet stove insert. Unfortunately living on an island, I can only get my hands on inferno pellets right now.
The problem is that the burn pot on my stove fills with pellets if I turn it on anything past2 for heat setting. So much so it clogs up the auger and begins to make the pellets fall straight into the ash pan. Anyone have experience with these stoves? I realize this isn't the Mercedes of pellets stoves but I'm hoping to find the right settings to make it work good consistently. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How long have you had the stove and how much have you burned? I would start with a good cleaning of all the internal exhaust pathways which is usually recommended after burning each ton. The manual does not really give many details on the exhaust path. You usually have to pull the unit to do this service - checking the combustion and convection blowers while you're there.

Depending on exhaust termination, you could try the leaf blower trick...

Only had it a week. Burned 160 lbs burned so far so still very new. I clean it every other day so far even if there is very little ash

Dealer or self installed? Does it have an OAK (outside air kit)? Many dealers say you don't need this but the manufacturer says you do If it has an OAK, make sure burn pot and ashpan are seated properly. Air coming in from areas where it's not supposed to can create vacuum problems. You can also use search feature to find others with the same stove that may have had similar issues.

It could be problems with your exhaust temperature switch (low limit switch - your temp appears to be 140) or vacuum switch. Unplug unit for safety!

OK, I removed the low limit switch and it looks fine. I googled it and found it is a normally open switch that closes at 120 degrees. I put an ohm meter on it and it is open. Took hair dryer to it and it closed. I can't say at 120 degrees, but didn't take long. I then put my thumb on the SS tip and it cooled down, and the switch opened. So in my opinion, it probably is ok.

Vacuum switch - disconnect tube from exhaust blower. If you suck on the tube, you should hear an audible click.

Dealer did not recommend installer but after researching it there was only 1 guy on island licensedd to do it. The stove is under warranty for 10 years though.

Sure sound like a lack of airflow. How high is the chimney run? Did the installer use 4" pipe? Does the outside air run up the chimney also? What size is the OAK? Does the stove have an air damper or combustion air trim on controller?

Granted inferno pellets are lousy, however, you should be able to do better than that with them.

Check for leaky gaskets or door not latching tight etc. How active is the flame when running?

Chimney is 30' and he used a 3" vent kit for exhaust. Fresh air intake isntvtry long and collects from within the chimney.has an auger trim button on the controller.t

It looks like 4" venting should have been used for a better burning appliance ... 15 EVL is the cut off for 3" venting and the liner alone would be that (every foot vertical = .5 x 30 = 15).

Trying to figure out why OAK is within chimney. Usually carried full height but below termination of venting at the top or through fireplace exterior cleanout if it has one.

The installer just put a 90 on the fresh air and said itwuld be fine getting air from the chimney. The instructions for the stove called for a 3" vent kit

Page 28 of the manual (broken link removed to http://www.savannahheating.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Tasman-40000-Pellet-Stove-Manual-2010-labtest.pdf) shows how the oak and the venting should have been run but I see nothing that says definitively that 4" pipe should be used even though that is the rule like Lake Girl said.

I think that is your problem right there if I had to guess.

Remove stove from house,take outside and test run.If not practical,unhook oak from back of stove and test run.Open window first.

Is there a steel plate or flashing at top of the chimney like the illustration on 28?

Check the burnpot gasket. The one on my US Stove 5660 (same basic stove) had a huge gap in it from the factory.

I think it may have been the pelletsallalong They form a solid mass in the burnpot and it needs to be chizelled out which i didnt realize when cleaning it before. Completely had blocked the venting below them and would not allow any ash through. Anyone have any recommendations on pellets? Also is it wise to mix good quality pellets with the low quality infernos?l

A poor installation and/or improper working stove can make a lot of people think they have a pellet problem.Brun what you got,keep a closer eye on stove,if you have never done it pick up 5 bags ea. different kinds.Burn them in rotation,thoroughly clean stove between brands,keep notes.

If the Infernos burn that ashy, you likely should pull the stove out and clean the exhaust venting too. Venting should be cleaned after burning each ton of pellets. With a 3" vent and that length of run, you may have to clean it more frequently.

You never mentioned if there is a plate at the top of the chimney. You will want a plate there to prevent water/snow coming down the chimney and potentially effecting the integrity of the chimney and back of the stove. While the heat from the insert may keep it dry when it is running, what about the rest of the year? If there is a plate, you are constricting fresh air intake with it only being drawn from within the chimney.

Pellets - find a good burning pellet and you can mix with the infernos to get rid of them

I had this problem from day one with my used inviro ef3 I just traded in. Drives you nuts because you can't put it high or your intire ash pan is full off pellets and flames then they start to pile up going into the auger. What I did for a year and a half was turn it of everyday and dump the burn pot on cold days I used my cheeta vac to hit it when the pile was going high. I feel your pain and hope you figure it out as it gets very frustrating.oh btw I went and tryed 4 different pellet brands nothing made a difference on it pilling up. Good luck

That is the point - if it has a plate and cap - how can the air be replenished in the chimney as it is being continuously drawn for combustion. The set-up is essentially starving the stove of enough oxygen for it to burn well. The stove has been designed to have unrestricted and dedicated air drawn from outside...

Hence my suggestion to unhook oak and try.
