Unknown wood no bark. Very hard and dense. Has faint earthy leather smell to me. Oak family? I honestly have no idea

Walnut can have a lot of variations.
 
Black Walnut, guaranteed.
 
I agree black walnut. The stuff I’ve handled had kind of an old tobacco smell to it.
