Help with wood id

Unknown wood no bark. Very hard and dense. Has faint earthy leather smell to me. Oak family? I honestly have no idea

It does. But it's different than any black walnut I've split before. It's way more reddish brown.

I agree black walnut. The stuff I’ve handled had kind of an old tobacco smell to it.
