Help with Wood ID

I hate to always ask for help with these id's but I really suck at this, esp. when there are no leaves to reference. Anyway, I cut this dead, downed tree in the ravine and when I split it the bark popped right off. I'm thinking maybe ash but every time I guess I'm wrong. Thanks.

Wood looks a lot like that nasty Ailanthus/Tree Of Hell.But the bark is much rougher.Could be Mulberry,but the color isnt 'solid' deep yellow,plus its a bit straighter grained than most you see...More yellow than the White Ash I see also.

How is the weight? Is it very light like Black Willow (they like near streams & damp places)? Kinda looks like Butternut,but again its an odd color than usual....

I am wondering if it is some sort of poplar with fungus in the wood that gives it a strange color. Something about the wood reminds me of poplar and the bark looks like a large Bigtooth or Quaking Aspen bark would look.

Bark looks like water oak maybe, wood reminds me of honey locust.

Thanks, poplar or aspen would make some sense as it's in a ravine that, til this year, has always been pretty damp. The rest of the trees down there are a mix of maples, oak, elm and some sort of poplar or aspen. It's a mid-weight wood, split easily and was pretty damp at about 40% on the mm.

In my neck of the woods it's called FARWOOD . There are many species of it , they are all good !

Popple is another name for poplar . . . aka aspen . . . quaking, bigtooth, etc. . . . at least around here in Maine and in some other places.

16 post in 13 months......I see why you think its locust but that sapwood pretty wide. Iam just guesing my self I think the bark looks kinda like apple.

Oh I Don't think black locust, I was leaning toward honey. The bark sorta fits honey locust also
