Freaking log fell out on me today.....I just was moving one around after loading (I know I probably should not have) but I could have burnt the house down.... I am feeling a little........scared. Has this happened to all you seasoned burners??????

Not to me. You must have a front loader. This is one reason those with front loaders load the stove the other way whereas us with side loaders just open the door and fill it lengthwise.

Most everyone has had something burning fall out at one time or another. The truth is your house is safe because you are there to move the offending piece. This is one of the many reasons I like NS burning. A hearth rug is nice for catching embers and that occasional log.
A bigger danger is leaving the stove running with the door open or some other air intake snafu.

My husband said "You should not have messed with it". But the whole left side was not burnin. I normally say respect the fire and let it do it's thing but I thought, just maybe if I move that left n-s log.........................end of story.

Never. I have a top loader... the only sensible way to fill a stove. :coolgrin:

I had it happen a couple times with the Castine. That's when you're happy to have a good hearth. The gut on the T6 seems to swallow up most everything I put in it and now mostly load N/S, so this is a distant memory.

Gamma, cut some of those long splits in 1/2's or 1/3's, and load that sucker N/S. Big difference .

Regular occurance here. Just lick your hand, grab that log and toss it back in asap, then get your beer back in that same hand all in the same movement. Youll never know it happened. FYI, keep at least a case of cold beer within reach during the burn season. Hell keep it around all yr long as I do and youre ready for anything.

Enjoy the excitement. With your elevated heart rate at that time, I would guess you got some good cardiovascular exercise. Look back on the event as a positive experience.

I remember when I was a kid my mom opened the stove doors and a log came rolling out. She had welding gloves on and she picked it up and tossed it back in screaming and yelling the whole time. That was the first time I saw her get scared like that. Funny how something like that you can remember from when you were three.

Well, I had one of the non-burning logs come down on my fingers today. Ouch!! 1 ton of oak on two fingers. Very swollen and sore.
Which is worse? Burning logs or heavy logs?
Experience best teacher I suppose.

Thank God I had my welding gloves on. Hell, I have scars on my arms from doing the turkey every Thanksgiving. My husband said now where those welding gloves because he knows how I am...

My stove loads n-s so I don't have to worry about whole logs rolling out. But last winter I had a 1/2 dollar sized coal pop out of the stove while raking the coals around and landed on the top of my foot in between my toes. I stood up and kicked and that sucker just wouldn't come off. Had to literally pop it off. NASTY burn.

The aforementioned day marks the point at which I decided never to load the stove naked again.

When loading the insert for an overnight burn, there are times when the load is packed a bit too tight on one side, or something shifts toward the front glass. I used to open the door, and try to get things to my liking. No more. It all turns to ash by morning anyway.

I started cutting a good portion of my wood to 10" now for my 13. Here is a little sample. I can't cut anymore due to the 3ft of snow covering this area.......
