Hot handle...

My Quad's metal handle has one of those spring type handle that is still pretty hot to touch. Does anybody have a recommendation on something I can use to wrap the handle that isn't flammable and wont melt either? Hopefully something that is somewhat readily available and doesn't have to be bought.

Wear an old pair of work gloves. It will help with loading as well. Since someone switched on the cold in NJ, I've finally been running the little Englander insert full tilt, and gloves have almost become a necessity. Though I've yet to use them regularly.

I have a pair of fireplace gloves but sometimes I'd like to simply walk up to the wood stove and toss in a log. I'd simply wrap it with one of those pot holders if not for them being only flame retardant.

My stove has the same type handle (our old one was wood) so it took me a couple of times to learn how to touch it. Lightly!

I was grabbing it too hard and pressing the metal onto the handle shaft.

Now, I always use the heavy, elbow length roughout leather gloves to reload, so it hasn't been an issue.

I've gotta agree with the glove suggestion. I got a pair of welding gloves for Christmas, what a difference!

I guess I can simply use some kitchen gloves, they are easier to throw on than the longer fireplace gloves... Maybe I can take a metal c-clamp and clamp it to the base of the handle...as a heat sink...

I have a Quad insert with the same handle. Unscrewing the spring on the handle helps some.

I always use gloves, even though the door has the unattached handle. Gloves come in handy to re-arange a split while loading as well as a quick wipe of fly ash from glass if necessary.

I dont know the arrangement of that handle you have on that quad, however, the local junkyard where i used to live had a nice selection of old gas grills, the handles on some of 'em have these black spacers between the grill lid and the handle, i've used those as handles on woodstoves already, or as spacers to cut down on heat transfer.
