The title says it all. I pulled the covering off today and saw that I've got some build-up on the fan. It looks black. Sometimes when the wind blows, if the fan is off, it will blow smoke back out into the furnace room. I figure that is where the build up is coming from. Any advice on taking this off and apart? Videos and pictures appreciated.

Wow! That shouldn't be happening. Sounds like a draft problem. How does it burn when it's running?

Things seem to burn just fine with good gasification giving me a blue flame with a good bed of coals. That's with the fan open about halfway. As far as the smoke backing out of the fan, that only happens on windy days when the door to the building is open. When the door is shut there isn't that much smoke. I've had the furnace since 2008 and while the smoke thing has happened in the past, this is the only time the fan has been covered by the same tar that appears on the inside of the firebox (though not nearly as thick).
