This is my first year burning pellets so I have nothing to compare to. I burn Heartland pellets and I have a small metal can (around 2 gallons) that I dump the ashes in. I have burnt a bit over 2 tons and I have emptied the can 3 times. Does that seem like excessive ash?

Seems pretty good. The P series stoves have a bin that can hold the remains of about a ton of pellets and a guess is that's about 2.5 gallons
