There's a 10 year old Harman P68 available, and I really want to replace our leaky wood stove with a pellet stove. My research has taken me the the P68 direction. I haven't seen the used stove, but the owner says it's clean and runs, he says some parts have been replaced but he can't remember which ones. Hmmm. He is asking $2000. That seems high to me, but what do I know???

Two grand is a bit hefty. It is 10 years old. What has been replaced parts wise if anything?
X 2 with Cladmaster and I would walk anything over $1,500 to $1,600 and that's if it is in good shape and works. New is $4,000 so they are asking half price at $2,000. If they want to sell it they need to come down. Half of the winter is over too. I think they would be hard pressed getting $2K come spring right around the corner.

Those sell in the $1,000. dollar range locally so I think it is where you live sort of creates the price.
A fellow down the road just sold a 3 year old p68 for 500, he was going to haul it to the junk yard, I told him to sell it and make sure the new owner was aware it was a problem stove (endless service calls and he was tired of coming home to a cold house).
I've bought 5 used stoves so far and only one was even close to being ready to use. So what I'm saying be cautious about a used stove.

If that P68 was newer it would be worth the $2K. A used stove can be like buying a used car FYI. If you do look at it and try to get the price down make sure you see it run and everything is operational. I'd call and just point blank ask what the bottom dollar is on it sight unseen before you invest your time going to look at it. A fellow in ID just scored an older P61 for $700 which was an excellent deal. Almost unheard of but deals do come along and happen.
How many square feet and what floor plan are you trying to heat? A brand new P43 sells for $2,900 but is a smaller stove.

Very true is the fact the local market dictates pricing also. Not sure about CO where the OP is located but it seems the North East pricing on stoves and pellets for that matter are at the upper tier in costs.
Thank you for all the helpful replies. The seller says he's firm on the price, so I think I'll walk on this one. I hate to do it, but I guess we will cough up the $$$$$$$$$ for a new one... yikes!

My brother lives outside Denver and has been bugging me to find him a stove. His wife would kill both of us if I did. Neat freak in a almost all white house. I keep telling him that NG is cheapest for them(and safer probably for both of us)

I picked up a 2008 P68 used for $1,200.00 a month or so back, it came with the hopper extension (not sure what that's worth). It was from a friend of mine, he was asking $1,400.00 originally, I felt what we agreed upon was a pretty fair price.
I'm seeing a semi used then kept in storage harman xxv on CL for 3198. It's from 2009. I know that price is outrageous considering a new one is 3899 (and there is a 100 coupon right now). What do you guys think would be a fair cash offer? There is some rust spots on the accordion heat exchanger for just sitting.
The used stove market is crazy. Unrealistic sellers and insanely cheap buyers for the most part. A used appliance should not sell for 50-75% of new retail no matter what it is as you are taking a financial risk on it.

It is. It is also hard to determine value. I can't exactly hop on kbb and get a ball park figure. I realize oil prices for a while were driving the cost of stoves and I think sellers think they hit a gold mine and should sell above market. There is a p68 advertised in my area and the guy wants to trade it for a 2002 or newer full size truck...
Well, we bit the bullet and bought a new P68 yesterday. Dang, that's a big bullet! Now we're discussing ways to vent it... any recommendations? We are kicking around the idea of running the pipes straight out the side of the house, but the install manual recommends a 3-5 ft. rise for draft. The sales guy says it's not necessary if you have an outside source for the air intake. Thoughts?

Maybe list what is common to go wrong and go from there. Look at a Harman new price and see how that compares to used. Harmans are a simple stove and you pay dearly for that warranty. With a little advice anyone should be able to diagnose what is wrong and replace the part. If you get the same troubleshooting manual as the dealers get it is pretty straightforward.

I'm with you, that bargain disappears and even after successful repairs you still have a burning box of old parts in your house [insert joke here].
I gather from a very small amount of info that the OP is someone who is better served by a warranty and installer to talk to should things go wrong. Used stoves are really only bargains if you are willing and able to do most of your own work. Stoves do seem simple enough but if you don't have at least some technical experience (me:watching and helping my more skillful family members mess around with stuff in garages and basements since 1979, just enough to be dangerous lol) they are probably intimidating. I think OP made a great choice to pass on the used and go new.
The seller wouldn't budge on the price. Knowing the abuse our 20 year old wood stove has had, we weren't interested in a pellet stove at that price.
