I received my bush order from Burgess Seed Co yesterday. 12 Popular s, 12 Rose of Sharon and 10 Privet Hedges. The ground is still frozen over here in WNY....What's the best way to care fro them until May arrives??? Thanks

Are they bare root? Assuming they are, they will be bound together and you just put the group into a large plastic bag with damp (not wet) peat moss. Make sure the roots are covered fully but the tops should be exposed to air. Place them in a cool, darker place and tie the bag so that it seals the roots reasonably well. You don't want them to get a lot of sunlight and start growing yet. If you have a garage or enclosed porch that is cool, even if it freezes lightly is just fine. I would plant them as soon as the ground can be worked with a shovel. Waiting until May is way too late. If you don't have peat moss, sawdust is fine. You do not want the roots wet or they will rot and you do not want them to dry out.

I would check the Burgess site or phone them on Monday and get more accurate info.

I was going to suggest damp newspaper, but the peat would be just fine. The plants are dormant now, so any cool dark place is good. I'd store in the basement.
