My 1997 Huqy 41 stopped pumping oil. I took the bar , clutch, sprocket off. Opened the pump and the plastic gear looks ok. The parts diagram shows a pick up tube, but its not obvious to me that I have one. Any advice? Do you pry the pick up tube out? I'm thinking the pick up screen may be clogged?

Its a '97 I bought new, low home owner use, just seasonal clean up around the house. We dont heat with wood

I did get the pick up tube out. Pryed it out with a pick. THe black gear is seized and will not turn. On a good pump, should the black gear spin freely? Dealer's already closed, I'll pick up one on Monday.

Yeah, the black gear should spin very easily. I've never dealt with an oil pump failure but it sounds like yours is shot. Fortunately it also seems to be inexpensive.

I'm guessing either the delivery tube got clogged, or I ran it a few minutes without oil in the reservoir. I always top off the oil when filling the gas, but noticed its was leaking around the delivery tube seal. As you said, the pumps not expensive, but the new bar will be about $30

If you replace the pump you might want to upgrade to the adjustable one from the 455 rancher It'll bolt right in well worth the swap. I just put one in a 345 that would never really work right. The 455 pump is great pump, easy swap. Jay
