hey guys, well i finally got my old school husky model 61 .

i threw some 40:1 gas mix in it from my brothers 455 gas can . . . idled great!

anyways, i called the previous owner and he said i should use 50:1 mix instead. im sure hes right.

also , HERES THE MODEL #

made in sweden . serial 1611 022655.. . what does this tell me? anything about what year is? i want a nice gray plastic top cover found on newer saws to shine her up a bit… anyone know what years or models will fit it?

also, what is the typical chain size ? 3/8? looking at going to a 18” length. its an oregon VJ blade now.

i wanna know a few things.

1. what top covers wll fit this model 61 ?

2. i want a chain brake... any ideas on cross models? see pics

3. what year is this?

4. can i get any bar for it? i want to stick with under 20" bars, but wanted to know if i need any other stats.


5. i hope i put that chain deflector on correctly. when i got the saw, the bar was off of it. there was some type of chain deflector plate.. did i sandwich it between the bar and the outer case correctly? it doesnt fit the other way anyways, so i figured it was right.

Having had a saw come back on me and almost kiss me on the nose, I value the chain brake.

That looks a lot like an old Partner chainsaw. They had the same metal chain guide so it looks to me like you have it on right.

i assume youve heard the saying "they dont make em like they used to" .....

ill get a chain brake. no worries in that department.

also, ide like to ad that theres something majestic about an old saw born in Sweden and working almost 30yrs around wood mills in Northwestern wisconsin, and now its final resting place is doing the same thing it was born to do, but only in ohio this time.

oh , and btw, these machines are quite simple . . not gonna nickel and dime me. . . there aint that much that could go wrong with her

That's a good ole saw.My dad's been using his 61 rancher since the early 80's and it's eaten a lot of wood over the years.I used it a bit last fall, and it will run with my 357xp without problem....maybe even better.

thanks LL and Titan , it seems like the 61 is the ol' reliable of the 80's saws . . . the compression is 140, so it should be ok for a while. again, i dont cut a lot, maybe 3 cords a year. . . like all you guys, im sure ill end up with a collection of saws seen enough for backups! so 50:1 in these ol buggers?

That's what I run, 50:1 - maybe 45:1, maybe 47:1 - 2.6oz added to 128oz of gas... it actually should matter if 2 drops are left in the oil bottle - I usually dump the bottle in the gas can then add .95gals of gas. Not really interested enough to do the math. Also, if that is the entire model / serial number, I was told that since my saw was made in the 80's, and the last number was a 3, it was made in 1983. Yours should be a 1985 model. Mine is completely orange, but as I mentioned before, it's been under tire(s) and trees, so it may have been white at one time.

40:1 is probably better. 50:1 will do fine. (Husky recommends running 50:1 in all their equipment now) I'd bet its a 1981. It looks like someone removed the chain brake. Be careful with that thing.

You probably won't find any new complete chain brakes for that unit. I'm honestly unsure whether a newer cover could be used. I've never tried it, but I doubt it. The best place to look is eBay.

Any good Husky dealer could set you up with a bar. I would stay in the 18-20" range.

How do the cylinder walls look? How's it run?

in a test run it ran great, idles perfect, etc. no scoring in the cyl walls . everythings frozen here now, ill start my cutting come late winter / early spring. . . i heard somewhere that fell trees are easier to crosscut when its the dead of winter cus the wood fibers are easier to chisel through... is that true???

p.s. i found a aftermarket cover, im sure itll work, for about 50$ . if i cant find anything thatll work by then, ill just get it. 50$ is worth the price if it saves me from getting a tattoo on my forehead of my woodsmanpro chain!

He's not wrong, but 30:1 - 50:1 is safe. I mix 40:1 simply because my chainsaw (and ALL my other gas powered tools) get gas from the same can I use for my dirtbike.

hmm , the plot thickens with this birthdate. the Swede's from another forum swear its a 1978 model, first edition . who knows, but ya, thats the whole serial .
