The wife and I have been going back and forth about getting a pellet stove for a couple of years. We finally decided to get a Quadrafire Santa Fe. In the location we plan to put the stove was a Duch West wood stove. This was installed when I purchased the house in 2004. I used it a few times and it was found to be cracked. It was removed and the hearth went unused for almost 10 years. Well, it made for a nice place for the TV... Anyway, I digress...

The wood stove vented into a 6 inch thimble and then into an 8 X 8 clay liner. From an inspection the liner is currently fine. I have spoken to my building inspector and asked if I can vent a pelet stove into the same flue that the wood stove was vented. His response was as long as the manufacturer says it can and the flue is in good shape then it can. Then I read here and other places that all pellet stoves MUST be vented into a metal liner of some sort. The manual indicated that it can be vented into a masonary chimney as long as the chimney was built to ICBO standards, which I have no idea what this is.... I am in Massachusetts so Mass codes would apply. If I HAVE to I will get the liner but I would rather save the $200-$400 if the masonary chimney will work.

Also, I am installing the OAK as a requirement of the building inspector. Most of the kit is in right now but there is not enough semi-rigid duct and I need about 2 feet more. I cannot find this anywhere. Any local source in the southern NH or Northern MA area? I would like to avoid buying another air kit for just the hose.

Thanks in advance for the help,
Jeff

Welcome to the forum! Someone should be along shortly that can offer some ideas on this.....

Can't help with the liner but I can with the oak. For the oak you can buy lengths of flex tubing only from certain suppliers. I suggest trying the flex exhaust from Autozone. Besides that you can buy 8' lengths from Russo.

You will find most people here will recommend that you run a liner all the way to the top of the chimney. In some areas this is code. Personally I wouldn't have it any other way. A liner to the top minimizes chances of exhaust leaks.

Some members here have in the past commented that too large a liner, such as your setup, could lead to draft issues with a pellet stove. Perhaps they will chime in.

The stove company has the final say. Its not there first "rodeo"

I have my stove vented in a masonry chimney w/ terracotta with no liner, an old wood stove chimney. No Problem.. I have been running this setup for 2 years work great. I did install an OAK this year....best thing I did, hope this helps.

Thanks for the replys! I was able to get a length of 2 inch flex exhaust pipe from Advance Auto. Thanks for that tip! It was a bit more ridged but I got it to work.

Outside air I now installed. Can't get it inspected till Monday because of my work schedule. I missed him today by 5 min...
Again, thanks for the help. We can't wait to use it. I am sure I will have more questions.

Got the inspection today. All set. Fired it up... Its a little loud but the fan is on high right now....
