I need some advice

I have a direct vent (through the roof)Vermont Castings Gas Stove.
It is located in my Sun room and I am about to have new slider windows installed, as well as a new ceiling and wall-coverings.

I was wanting to leave the pilot light lit during this process because I'm concerned it wont re- light afterward, without a new thermocouple installed.

I want to cover the stove for protection against damage during this process.

Is there something I can cover it with which wont burn or damage the stove?

NO. And, if you will need a new thermocouple after, you actually need one now. If you don't need one after, then it is fine now. If it were mine I would take it out, put it back in later and get it serviced if its a problem. That would be safe..

Thermocouples are cheap and just about any appliance parts store can match yours up. You better head out to the store before it starts to snow.

I may be wrong, but if the thermocoupler is bad, and the pilot light for some reason should go out, wont the gas not shut off and still flow?

Yep, you are 100% correct. Actually the gas will shut off (or should) anytime the thermocoupler is defective.

Yeah, the whole point of the thermocouple is to shut off the gas if the pilot light goes out.

I think that a bad thermocoupler would make the pilot go out on its own, so if the pilot is still burning it should light again with no problem. I would call your dealer to be sure but most gas appliances with pilots work like this.

Turn it off. If it does not work it is an accident waiting to happen anyway. Usually, you can fix 'em by some cleaning of the pilot tube and also the connection where it meets the valve. Clean the soot off or it also.
