I could believe it is Red Maple. It looks slightly punky. And the picture appears to have been taken in the 1850's, so it should be seasoned by now.
It looks like long time dead maple to me. I had some that had a similar wavy pattern. It didn't really split with the grain...it just split. Kinda weird.
I have also had some long dead elm that did this as well but the bark in your pics don't lead me in that direction.
Is this the camera you used to take the pic? Just messin' with ya. I agree with red maple. That's all.

I think it is an elm. Was this standing dead?
Your first picture shows the splits resting on red oak leaves, not maple.
