Guys and gals I'm not real sure here. I think its a maple but don't quote me on it. I've cut a lot of red maple but this doesn't look like it but I may be wrong

I could believe it is Red Maple. It looks slightly punky. And the picture appears to have been taken in the 1850's, so it should be seasoned by now.

It looks like long time dead maple to me. I had some that had a similar wavy pattern. It didn't really split with the grain...it just split. Kinda weird.

Yea that's how this did. I had to break out the hydro splitter. It laughed at my fiskars

I have also had some long dead elm that did this as well but the bark in your pics don't lead me in that direction.

No I found it down with several others

I haven't had a maple split like that on me, but that doesn't mean it can't happen. I agree with claydogthe pick looks like American elm. You have the split though and "wood" know better than me.

Yea my yard is full of oaks but this wood came from another location. This obviously isn't oak
