A nice fire going and the secondary combustion is going, I am planning on leaving and want to add some wood. Should I
a) just add as much wood as I can fit and leave the air down?
b) add a little and leave the air down?
c) add some wood turn the air up and let it char, then turn down and leave?
d) other?

"C"

While still in the learning phase somewhat, I've found that if the fire is already burning pretty good, you'll achieve C by just doing A. Fire is hot, new wood chars and smokes, smoke burns thru secondaries. Everything settles down back to normal in 15 minutes or so. I do wait for that "settle down back to normal" before I exit stage left, though.
